Who We’re Helping

Video: We made Rex
and Patrick show us
the OLPC OX
before they could go
play with it.

logo_v2.jpg This year, we are supporting the activities of the One Laptop per Child foundation, a non-profit organization created by faculty members from the MIT Media Lab to design, manufacture, and distribute laptops that are sufficiently inexpensive to provide every child in the world access to knowledge and modern forms of education. OLPC initially is concentrating on distribution in countries where governments have made commitments for the funding and program support required to ensure that all of their children can own and effectively use a laptop.

The laptop that is being distributed is called the OX and was designed collaboratively by experts from both academia and industry, bringing to bear both extraordinary talent and many decades of collective field experience for every aspect of this nonprofit humanitarian project. The result is a unique harmony of form and function; a flexible, ultra-low-cost, power-efficient, responsive, and durable machine with which nations of the emerging world can leapfrog decades of development--immediately transforming the content and quality of their children's learning.

This year, as part of our annual T-shirt sharing, we are donating funds to help distribute 20 of the OLPC OXs. If you'd like to make a direct contribution to the OLPC, you can find out more LapTopGiving.org. Until December 31, the Foundation is allowing individuals to participate in a Buy one, Give one program -- which is how Rex and Partrick got to enjoy the one you see in the video before it got wrapped back up for (shh, we can't tell) someone's Christmas.

And here is a report from ABC News about the OXs being distributed to students in a Peruvian town.
