Empty Bowls Feed Millions

The 70-degree breezy temperatures Sunday in Austin, Texas, were perfect for standing in line -- a line that snaked half a mile around the Mexican American Cultural Center for the 12th Annual Empty Bowl Project to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank.

Team Hammock was part of the larger-than-expected crowd and contributed to the purchase of 2,200 hand-painted bowls from local artists and students, giving the Capital Area Food Bank their single largest donation day of the year with more than $30,000 raised.

Here's how it worked: Everyone picked a beautiful hand-crafted bowl, then had it washed and filled with soup from one of many local restaurants who donated their best recipes and time. We then took our soup out to a beautiful outdoor courtyard area to sit and relax with some live music. Our bowls were washed and wrapped to be taken home as a reminder of those we helped out!

For each bowl purchased with a donation of $15 to the food bank, 75 meals will be provided to the community. That's more than 2 million meals total!

Proceeds from this year's project will go to the food bank's Kids Café program, which provides hot meals and homework assistance at after-school programs around Central Texas.
