The challenge of this year's Christmas calendar

December 22, 2008

We've had a long tradition at Hammock of closing the offices from Christmas Eve until the day after New Years Day. But this year, the calendar (those Thursday holidays) and the challenge of hitting several closing dates have caused us to slightly alter our tradition by shifting it a day backwards. We'll be working through 1 p.m. on Christmas Eve -- and have even decided to provide heated offices that day (sorry, I just had to throw in that Dickensian reference).

We will then (officially) be closed until Monday, January 5.

I added the word "officially" because there will be people in the office on most of those days due to two factors, one of which is not how much people love the office. 1. Despite several months of planning for the holiday break, this year we've had some work appear that will require a skeleton staff (oops, more Dickens) to stay busy. 2. Some of us love to use that week to catch up on all of those "things we'd love to do if we only had the time" projects.

For instance, we have another blog and an email newsletter here on Hammock.com that we've had on the runway for nearly two months, about to take off. I'm going to address those during the quiet time between Christmas and January 5.

And, as a GTD person (Getting Things Done is a personal productivity system), I've got some "read and review" items (a category I use for dealing with items that are not critical but that I'd like to get around to one day), that I'm looking forward to finally being able to actually read and review.

This year, there will be no travel for my family. As my children are both away at school, they've decided that staying home is the travel they prefer. So we'll be seeing movies and playing tennis (indoors, of course) and watching entire series of TV shows in marathon sessions.

So, bottom line: I'll be around. Easy to reach and not really going off the grid.

However, I plan to be productively unproductive.

On assignment and offline until Monday, July 21

July 10, 2008

Okay. I'm not actually "on assignment," however I'll be writing about my next few days for an article appearing in American Spirit next year. I'm doing wood therapy. As I'll be working with sharp objects, I'm going to avoid most distracting devices during my time out of the office. However, if you need to reach me, you can contact Natalie Willis (nwillis[AT] hammock.com).

Happy 4th of July

July 4, 2008

Today, our offices are closed to celebrate the 4th of July. We are very fortunate at Hammock to work with a client -- the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution -- (the DAR) who provides us with the opportunity to celebrate the founding of our America 365 days a year. Here's a five-minute video about Gen. John Knox and a special exhibit at DAR Headquarters. I put it together last week while in D.C., my "second" home.

After the Summit, back in the office

June 12, 2008

The first part of this week was a blur. Sunday through Tuesday night, I was part of a crew from Hammock in D.C. attending the National Small Business Summit, where we helped produce a real-time event media gallery for NFIB. From there, I took an early morning train for a day-full of meetings in New York. An evening flight (late, as usual) home to Nashville last night and now I'm back in the office. My travel schedule is light through the end of the month.

Rex During the Week of June 9

June 9, 2008

Along with several of my Hammock colleagues, I'm in Washington DC on Mon.-Tues, June 9-10, for the NFIB Small Business Summit. You can follow our coverage of the event at the multi-media gallery we are coordinating for the event. I'll be in New York on Wednesday and back in the office in Nashville on Thursday and Friday.

March 24-28 schedule

March 23, 2008

After much travel (some work-related, some college-visiting with son-related), I'm back in the office for most of this week. Did I mention that I had a cold during nearly all of that travel? Did I mention I'm a real wimp about being sick with a cold? Glad that's over. Gee, it's nice to be back at work and well.

March 18-21 schedule

March 18, 2008

I am "on the road" this week, starting Tuesday, March 18. As always, however, I'm available via e-mail and will be checking voice mail messages. But I'll admit, e-mail works better as it checks me. Also, you can text me at this number: 615.310.0919.

Happy New Year

January 2, 2008

Returning to the office after the fog of Christmas week is always a challenge. All those organizing things I hoped to complete are still sitting there hoping for me to complete them. But I had some wonderful time with family and friends, near and extended. I'm back in the office and all of the ways I can be contacted should work well. I'll keep this space updated with my whereabouts.

How to reach me during the holidays

December 21, 2007

Following a 16-year-old tradition, the Hammock offices are closed between Christmas Eve and New Years Day. While the offices are closed, I'm still fairly easy to reach. Click on the e-mail link on the right or e-mail me at rexhammock@gmail.com. I'll also be checking my office voice mail -- however, if you leave me a message, it may be a good thing for you to e-mail letting me know -- my voice mail checking skills are questionable.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. See you back here on January 2.
