A Day in the Life of Patrick Burns

Patrick2.jpg
There wasn't a Red Sox game on, so I was able to steal a few minutes from our Photoshop rockstar and production coordinator, Patrick Burns, to talk about a typical day in the office for him.

What do you reach for when you need an afternoon pick-me-up?
For an afternoon pick-me-up, I'll usually grab a quick snack that I bring from home like a grain bar, peanuts, fruit etc. Caffeine after noon or energy drinks don't really agree with me. If I happen to forget a snack, I just usually stretch my legs a little.

What is the last thing you do before you leave the office every evening?
As I'm getting ready to leave I'll glance at the local traffic cameras to see what's in store for me. Either a 30 min drive home or one that's over an hour. This is helpful when I need to get home for a scheduled event like my daughter's softball game. On Thursdays I make sure the weekly backup tapes are ready to run, but the very last thing I do is make sure the art/viewing room's lights are out. There are 5000 Kelvin light bulbs in that room. We use that room for color management, and we want to save their shelf life.

Do you listen to music while you work?
I do listen to online radio, however my kids laugh as I listen to espn.com, local sports stations and late afternoon I'll tune into WEEI in Boston for some Red Sox talk.

How do you refocus if you're having trouble concentrating or getting the creativity flowing?
Creatively my challenges are producing requests from our designers that could seem very difficult. My first and always response is "sure, we can do that" but there have been times where I thought it was impossible to create the effect. However, driving home (see #2) helps with reflecting on different techniques to achieve the effect they're looking for. I'm still batting 1.000.

What three software programs do you use every day and could not live without?
I'm going to lump the entire Adobe Creative Suite as one application as I use the entire suite every day. I use two web browsers daily -- Safari and Firefox -- for techniques, troubleshooting forums, etc. Depending on where we are in production, Flightcheck Professional is one of my favorite and useful tools for our workflow. E-mail is a given as well as IM just for communication.
