AARP Bulletin Circulation Glitch

AARP is getting a little unwanted publicity these days thanks to a glitch in its "Bulletin" circulation system. It seems that after months of not sending a member his bimonthly "Bulletin," the senior-citizen advocacy group made up for it in spades - they sent him 1,000 copies of the January-February issue.

As the little plaque above many an editor's desk assures us, "Misteaks Hapen." Modern circulation management systems are true marvels, affording publishers an ever-growing list of options to customize delivery and even the volume itself. To a certain extent, that sophistication can sometimes lead to amusing goofs such as happened here. (I had to applaud the reporter's refraining from calling the error a "senior moment.")

At Hammock, we work closely with our clients and printers to keep circulation lists up to date and to avoid mistakes that can prove irksome to readers and costly to out clients. And we hope that each issue of the magazines their readers anticipate arrives crisp, clean - and in the proper amount.
