These are some of the sites I visit (if not daily) then weekly to find news and information about the printing, publishing and postal industries. The most helpful site to me is whattheythink.com, which covers news for the printing industry. Plus my daily email from whattheythink.com includes the Dilbert cartoon of the day.
Here are other some sites I use:
xrite.com/
printprofessionalmag.com
printwiki.org
creativepro.com
idealliance.org
swop.org
americanbusinessmedia.com (great for explaining new postal regulations)
adobe.com
http://www.pubexec.com/
The internet is indispensable for uploading and viewing print files we send to printers. It's made our jobs a little green because we have eliminated file carriers as Zip disks and reduced the use of CDs. Zip disks are as archaic as camera ready artboards. We don't need overnight deliveries. If we send a print file over the internet at 5 p.m., the printer can start working on it immediately–not waiting until the package arrives the next day as in the past. No longer do we send hard copies of the files to printers, which eliminates paper and toners to make the hard proofs.
The United States Postal Service is encouraging the use of the internet. I've just signed up for Postage Statement Wizard. Instead of having 3541 forms, which detail the mailing of the magazines and are essential forms for circulation confirmation, mailed to me, I can view and download them online now. This will eliminate paper.
Recently, lightning struck our house and fried our internet cable modem, televisions, garage door opener and other electronics. What was the first thing we replaced? The cable modem. Gotta have that internet.
