  • It's that time of year again
We <3 this list.
The word wonks at Lake Superior State University have issued their annual list of overused words that they feel we should eschew. The list includes "desperate search" - obviously they didn't have to execute one to find candidates! - "maverick" (Sen. McCain's endless repetition of "my friends" in the debates should have made the list), and, thank goodness, "green."

Although they issue an annual list, the LSSU word guardians refrained from saying "it's that time of year again" in their press release - except to make it part of the overused list. I guess by using the Internet they were keeping the announcement carbon-low, although they condemned the "carbon"-nation of our discussion of environmental issues.

I'll stop there and let you read the list for yourselves. Having just listened to an interview I gave recently, I'm going to nominate "uh" as another overused word. Like, you know?

They tell the people building the architecture of the site what sections will go where to give them get an idea of what they will have to code, and they give the designers an overview of how the different pages will work together, which is helpful in choosing design elements.

Two more sets that we've been talking about around here lately are lie/lay and who/whom.

Mimosa, Anyone?

mimosa.jpg
The color "Mimosa" has been chosen as Pantone's 2009 color of the year. As an editor, I didn't realize that such a color even existed and I got lost for a few minutes in my own thoughts of enjoying Sunday brunch on the beach. When I came back to earth, I turned to Hammock Graphic Designer Ben Stewart and Art Director Kerri Davis to learn a little more this cheerful and youthful color:
