Here are some important points from her talk to people who run association, many of whom are "afraid" of social media while others are very innovative.
1. It's not about the technology, it's about relationships: Next year, there will be a new set of technologies -- it about strategy, approach, being wherever people are, not about technology.
2. Start now, start small: Your members are not going to wait on you. Start by listening: Find out what members are saying to one-another. Find the audience first. Pick a goal. Find your revolutionary (and internal champion -- hey, you already know who they are, probably.)
3. Let go of control: Get over the "IT and legal won't let us." Don't be afraid to fail (Wal-Mart failed miserably at social media at least three times before getting it right.) Stop shouting, start listening.
Sidenote: Charlene did a great job today for many reasons, but here are two: She knew her audience and used examples from the association community. Likewise, she attended yesterday's sessions so she knew the context of what the audience had heard. Secondly, she didn't depend on PPT except for 4-5 points. She talked, she didn't present. Great job, Charlene.

Great post! Makes me wish I had been there to hear Charlene's presentation. "It's about strategy, approach, being wherever people are, not about technology." I love that approach to social media.

Great point - Stop shouting, start listening. That is the part of social that people often forget. It's not all about talking. Social is interaction which includes listening.
