1. Competency: You can do what you say you can do. That you are competent, however, doesn't impress me. It's expected. I pay you to be competent, so don't expect me to be loyal for it. It's simply satisfying them.
2. Integrity: You tell the truth. I expect this, also. Most associations are afraid of transparency. They are terrified that people will say something bad about them. You can't avoid doing it today. Today, the expectation is for transparency. Still, not going to get alot of credit for it.
3. Recognition: Am I just another number, or do you really know me. Each of you members has a unique ability.
4. Anticipation: You have to help a member with *their* cause, not yours.
5. Proactivity: You're thinking ahead of the member before they know what it is they need. You do the work for them. Do things based on what members need, not what the association needs. Look for opportunities where you
6. Chemistry: Create common bonds. NOT: We're staff, you're members.
7. Belonging: Do you help members feel like they belong, not just paying dues.
8. Purpose: Give credit to your members -- not the organization -- for the successes. They need to to feel a part of the purpose.

Rex: GREAT stuff. If I may, I'd like to add some thoughts from our experience:
1 - Competency: Not doing what you said you'd do, plus a really good excuse, does NOT equal doing what you said you'd do.
2 - Integrity: Bad news never gets better with time. Come to think of it, neither does good news.
3 - Recognition: Praise in public.
4 - Anticipation: First, seek to understand, then to be understood.
5 - Proactivity: When you come to the end of your rope, hang on to the knot you tied the last time you were there (kinda borrowed from Teddy Roosevelt).
6 - Chemistry: What in the world isn't chemistry?
7 - Belonging: NORM! (Cheers fans will get that one.)
8 - Purpose: What's the use of a sundial in the shade (Ben Franklin).
Thanks again for a great post . . . have a GREAT ASAE09!

Rex,
Thank you very much for the post. If anyone is wondering how they can build more loyal relationships by demonstrating those 8 "behaviors," the handout that went along with the presentation may help. They can download it at: http://www.asaeannualmeeting.org/handouts.cfm

PS To everyone who attended my session at ASAE, sorry for all the technical problems. It was very frustrating, but I appreciate your patience.
